Actress Doris Day died on this date. She was 96 years old and had been retired from acting for over 30 years. Even so, she was never forgotten.
Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff was born in the state of Ohio on April 3, 1922. She studied ballet from an early age and even wanted to become a professional dancer, but after suffering an accident that left her bedridden, she had to put her dream of becoming a ballerina on hold. During her recovery, she began to sing. Later, she would develop even more and begin a successful career.
She was later hired by a radio station. In 1947, Doris made her film debut in the film Romance on the High Seas (1948), by Michael Curtiz. In this film, she sang “It’s Magic” and received her first Oscar nomination. After that, a handful of other innocent films, with young women and good wives, and her reputation as a virginal and sweet woman was established. In 1959, she was nominated for an Oscar for best actress, but lost to Simone Signoret.
After the death of her third husband, Marty, Doris retired from film and began hosting her own TV show. The actress currently lives alone and is an advocate for animal rights. Her only son, Terry, died in 2003, aged 62, from cancer, leaving Doris with only one grandchild.
