Paulette Goddard was born around 1911 (the exact year remains uncertain). She began her career as an advertising model and soon joined the Ziegfeld Follies, where her first role was simply sitting on a swing holding a puppy. Known as “Sugar” among her friends, she made her film debut in the Laurel and Hardy short Berth Marks (1929).

Goddard stepped away from her career for a period while married to a millionaire but returned to film in 1932 with Torero! (also known as The Fighter). Her marriage to Charlie Chaplin marked the turning point in her career, though her talent was evident on its own. She starred alongside Chaplin in two classic films: Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940).

Like many actresses of her era, Paulette auditioned for the role of Scarlett O’Hara in the epic Gone with the Wind (1939), but was ultimately replaced at the last minute by Vivien Leigh.

She then signed with Paramount Pictures, starring in films such as The Cat and the Canary (1939), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), and The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946). Paulette received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for So Proudly We Hail! (1943).

After this peak, she appeared in several B-movies before retiring from the screen, with only one more appearance in the TV movie The Snoop Sisters (1972).

Paulette Goddard passed away in 1990 at age 78 at her home in Switzerland.
