Daughter of a Swedish father and German mother, Ingrid Bergman studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre School in Stockholm. She made her acting debut in 1932 with the film Landskamp. After starring in nine Swedish films, she had already become a well-known actress in her country by 1939, when producer David O. Selznick brought her to Hollywood to star in the remake of Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939), opposite Leslie Howard.

Bergman’s elegant and versatile presence allowed her to play a wide range of roles, from simple women (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1941) to heroines (Joan of Arc, 1948) and princesses (Anastasia, 1956). Throughout her career, she won three Academy Awards for Gaslight (1944), Anastasia (1956), and Murder on the Orient Express (1974). However, the role that made her most famous was in Casablanca (1942), a timeless romance set in the Moroccan city of the same name. In this classic film, she starred alongside the equally acclaimed Humphrey Bogart in a story of impossible love, culminating in one of cinema’s most unforgettable scenes: the foggy airport farewell.

Among her greatest successes, besides Casablanca and Anastasia, is For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), which earned her an Oscar nomination. She also worked with Alfred Hitchcock in two films: Spellbound (1945) and Under Capricorn (1949). With Italian director Luchino Visconti, she starred in the comedy Siamo Donne (We, the Women, 1953). While filming Autumn Sonata (1978) with Ingmar Bergman, Ingrid was already battling cancer; she passed away at age 67 on her birthday.
