Before the rise of Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren, there was Silvana Pampanini. Born in Rome on September 25, 1925, she became one of the most popular actresses in Italian cinema and was considered a sex symbol in the 1950s.
A music student, she was entered into the Miss Rome contest by her teacher. At 22, she was crowned and went on to place second in the Miss Italy pageant. Following the contest, she graced numerous magazine covers and received film offers, appearing alongside major stars. Many fell for her, including comedian Totò, but she never reciprocated his affection.

Silvana visited New York, Denver, and Hollywood, where she received job offers. However, due to her inability to speak English, she declined them all. In France, she was also highly admired and nicknamed “Ninì Pampan.” She was well-known in Mexico as well, thanks to the film Sed de amor (1959) with Pedro Armendáriz. In 1953, she visited Buenos Aires accompanied by director Vittorio De Sica. When her flight made a stopover in Brazil, a large crowd awaited her.
