The Dakota building is located near Central Park and became known for being the place where Beatle John Lennon was murdered by a fanatic. But it also had and still has illustrious residents.

The first thing that catches your eye is the luxurious and stylish architecture, marked by art nouveau. The luxurious building and its apartments were even called one of the most perfect places in the world by Time magazine. Given this, many people have been interested in living there since it was built between 1880 and 1884. In the 1970s, it became one of New York’s historic buildings. There is even a book telling its story. Check out this link.

Some interesting facts mark the place, such as the aforementioned death of John Lennon and also for having been the setting for Rosemary’s Baby (1968), by Roman Polanski.

The Dakota, which was built by Edward Clark and Henry J. Hardenberg, had 65 apartments that were completely different from each other, and they could be accessed through luxurious elevators that were separated throughout the building. The extremely modern infrastructure included a large dining room, a game room, a gym and a common patio. Electricity was provided by a power plant on site, which allowed central heating to all the apartments. It was built with the upper classes in mind and combined the amenities of a hotel with work spaces, in addition to an excellent location. A few years later, due to financial problems of its owners, the apartments began to be rented and sold. This was from 1961 onwards, when it became a cooperative. But don’t think that wanting to live there and having money is enough. Each of the residents is approved by a strict Board and the list of rejected ones includes names like Cher and Madonna, just to give you an idea. The Dakota’s Most Famous Residents

There’s no way to list all the famous residents, and I confess that it was difficult to find photos of some of them in their apartments, so I’ve included a list of some of the most famous ones below:

Lillian Gish: The beloved actress lived there in the early days, probably in the 1910s and 1920s. I couldn’t find information about how long she lived there, but she spent a good deal of time in one of the apartments.

Lauren Bacall: The actress bought the apartment when she married her second husband, Jason Robards. She lived there for 53 years until her death in 2014. Her nine-bedroom home was recently sold for $23.5 million. God, I wish I could visit that house. Lauren Bacall said she heard the gunshot that killed John Lennon, but thought it was a tire blowout.

Judy Garland: The apartment where the actress lived was for sale in 2016, according to the Architectural Digest website. It also has nine bedrooms and elegant living rooms with French doors, as well as a large kitchen. This is a current image of the place and from what I can tell, it doesn’t bear any marks from the time when she lived there. I couldn’t find any photos of her in the apartment to make comparisons. It’s a shame.

Actor couple Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney’s aunt) and Jose Ferrer lived there in the 1960s. We’re not sure if this family photo was taken there.

Rudolf Nureyev: he loved luxury and ostentation, and had a huge collection. After his death in 1993, a huge dispute began led by lawyer Barry Weinstein, who wanted to claim the assets left by one of the most acclaimed dancers in the world. This would be a photo of one of the bathrooms in the residence.

John and Yoko leaving the Dakota building. They are perhaps the most famous residents of the building, due to the drama they experienced there. The building was the couple’s official residence since 1973 and he remained there until his death on December 8, 1980.
