Famous Residents of the Dakota Building: Legends of New York
Discover the celebrities and iconic figures who have called New York City’s legendary Dakota Building home. A journey through history and glamour!

The Dakota building is located near Central Park and became known for being the place where Beatle John Lennon was murdered by a fanatic. But it also had and still has illustrious residents.
The first thing that catches your eye is the luxurious and stylish architecture, marked by art nouveau. The luxurious building and its apartments were even called one of the most perfect places in the world by Time magazine. Given this, many people have been interested in living there since it was built between 1880 and 1884. In the 1970s, it became one of New York’s historic buildings. There is even a book telling its story. Check out this link.
Some interesting facts mark the place, such as the aforementioned death of John Lennon and also for having been the setting for Rosemary’s Baby (1968), by Roman Polanski.
The Dakota, which was built by Edward Clark and Henry J. Hardenberg, had 65 apartments that were completely different from each other, and they could be accessed through luxurious elevators that were separated throughout the building. The extremely modern infrastructure included a large dining room, a game room, a gym and a common patio. Electricity was provided by a power plant on site, which allowed central heating to all the apartments. It was built with the upper classes in mind and combined the amenities of a hotel with work spaces, in addition to an excellent location. A few years later, due to financial problems of its owners, the apartments began to be rented and sold. This was from 1961 onwards, when it became a cooperative. But don’t think that wanting to live there and having money is enough. Each of the residents is approved by a strict Board and the list of rejected ones includes names like Cher and Madonna, just to give you an idea. The Dakota’s Most Famous Residents
There’s no way to list all the famous residents, and I confess that it was difficult to find photos of some of them in their apartments, so I’ve included a list of some of the most famous ones below:
Lillian Gish: The beloved actress lived there in the early days, probably in the 1910s and 1920s. I couldn’t find information about how long she lived there, but she spent a good deal of time in one of the apartments.
