Born in 1921 in Winnipeg, Canada, Deanna Durbin moved to the United States with her family when she was just one year old. Her early musical talent was quickly discovered by Jack Sherrill, who saw her perform in a recital. At age 14, she was signed by MGM in 1935. There, she joined the ranks of young stars in what was known as the studio’s “Great Family,” alongside Mickey Rooney, Freddie Bartholomew, Jackie Cooper, and Judy Garland. After appearing in the short film Every Sunday with Garland, MGM decided to invest in only one teenage singing actress—Judy—releasing Durbin from her contract.
This turned out to be a stroke of luck for Universal Pictures, which signed Deanna and cast her in Three Smart Girls, a film that became an immediate hit. Her popularity soared, and she soon promoted her work on radio programs, including the one hosted by Eddie Cantor. Her second film, One Hundred Men and a Girl, solidified her status as a box office sensation. By 1937, she had already placed her handprints at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Just two years later, Durbin received a Juvenile Academy Award, honoring her contribution to the entertainment industry as a positive role model for youth. A string of successful films followed, including The Amazing Mrs. Holliday, Hers to Hold, and His Butler’s Sister. In 1949, after starring in 25 films, Deanna chose to leave the spotlight. She married for the third time, to director Charles David, with whom she remained until his death in 1999. Despite numerous offers, she never returned to public life.
Deanna Durbin lived peacefully in Paris, enjoying a quiet and private existence away from Hollywood fame. She passed away on March 30, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of charm, vocal brilliance, and classic performances that continue to captivate old Hollywood fans around the world.
