Lucile Vasconcellos Laghanke was born on May 3, 1906 in Illinois. She began her career during her adolescence, when she appeared in a series of films as an extra in silent films. One of the factors that initially made it difficult for her to work in talking films was her deep voice, which many considered masculine.

Mary decided to work in theaters until new opportunities arose in the cinema. As we discussed in this article, she was involved in a scandal during her separation from her husband. But she turned things around and continued her career successfully, even winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The Big Lie (1941).

She worked extensively on the screen until she retired in 1964. After that, she decided to travel the world, which helped her come up with ideas for her books. In total, she made 109 films over the course of her 45-year career. It is worth remembering that in addition to being an actress, Mary Astor was also a writer, having published five books and an autobiography, A Life on Film.

The actress died on September 25, 1987 at the age of 81 due to pulmonary emphysema. She left behind two children.
