Son of a barber, James Stewart originally wanted to become an architect and even studied at Princeton University. While there, he met director Joshua Logan, who introduced him to Henry Fonda. Both encouraged Stewart to try his luck in acting. After a few minor roles, he landed his first major part in Frank Capra’s You Can’t Take It with You (1938), followed by The Philadelphia Story. During World War II, Stewart enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, eventually becoming a Colonel and earning several medals of honor for his service.

After the war, Stewart returned to Hollywood success with classics like It’s a Wonderful Life (co-starring Donna Reed) and several Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, including Rear Window (1954) alongside Grace Kelly, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), and Vertigo (1958). He also starred in television movies such as Hawkins (1974), a role that earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama.

Stewart was nominated for five Academy Awards during his career, winning Best Actor in 1941 for The Philadelphia Story. James Stewart passed away on July 2, 1997, leaving behind a legacy as one of classic Hollywood’s most beloved and versatile actors.
