Jane Fonda: Biography of the Actress, Activist, and Hollywood Legend
Discover Jane Fonda’s remarkable life as an award-winning actress, passionate activist, and enduring Hollywood icon shaping film and social movements.

Daughter of actor Henry Fonda and sister of Peter Fonda, Jane Seymour Fonda was born in New York on December 21, 1937. Her mother, Frances Ford Seymour, who suffered from constant depression, ended up committing suicide on her 42nd birthday while she was in a sanatorium. Peter chose to hide the reason for his mother’s death for a long time, saying that she had died of a heart attack. But a little later, the girl, who was already 13 years old, found out the real reason through the newspapers. This had a big impact on her and her brother Peter. At the age of 15, Jane began dancing and began a modeling career, appearing in magazines such as Vogue. After studying in Paris, she returned to the United States and began studying at Lee Strasberg’s famous Actors Studio. After working in theater, she began her film career in the 1960s, in the film Tall Story. She became a sex symbol after making films such as Cat Ballou (1965) and especially Barbarella (1968), directed by her then husband Roger Vadim. Little by little, as she gained experience in life, Jane began to feel uncomfortable with the label of sex symbol. It limited her career and made her feel like an object. In fact, part of the blame for this came from Roger Vadim, who turned all his wives into sex symbols. The relationship with the director lasted eight years.
Jane won 2 Oscars. The first for Klute (1972) and the second for Coming Home (1979). But she was nominated for other films: The Morning After, On Golden Pond (where she worked with her father), The China Syndrome, Julia and Night of the Desperate. She also became famous for a series of aerobic exercises that became a huge success and have made her still in excellent shape today.
Jane had announced her retirement in 1991, but ended up returning in Monster in Law, a 2005 film. The actress is also known for her political struggle, being a political activist and hated by some because of this. She married twice more: Tom Hayden (1973 – 1990) and Ted Turner (1991 – 2001). With Tom she had her only biological son, fellow actor Troy Garity, and adopted Mary Luana. The actress currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and continues to make films.
