Gloria DeHaven: Hollywood Star and Her Remarkable Cinematic Journey

Gloria Mildred DeHaven was born on July 23, 1925. Her father was director Carter DeHaven and her mother was vaudeville actress Flora Parker.

Gloria made her screen debut in the film Modern Times (1936) by Charles Chaplin. She played one of the little sisters of Paulette Goddard’s character and was not credited. She was only 11 years old at the time and only appeared in a film again in 1940, when she had a small role in George Cukor’s The Original Woman.

Gloria became better known to the public when she was hired by MGM and began to appear in some musicals and romances such as Two Girls and a Sailor (1944), Betwen two women (1945), Summer Stock (1950) and Down Among the Sheltering Palms (1953). In addition to acting, she also sang.

In the following decades, however, she began to appear more sporadically in films, series and TV shows. She even had her own talk show between 1969 and 1971. In 1997, she starred alongside Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in The Big Short.

The actress was married three times. To actor John Payne (1944 – 1950), Martin Kimmel (1953 – 1954) and Richard Fincher (1957 – 1963 and 1965 – 1969). Gloria had four children: with John Payne she had two, Kathleen and Thomas, and with Fincher, Harry and Faith.

Gloria passed away on July 30, 2016 in Las Vegas. She had suffered a stroke months before.
