Fredrick Martin MacMurray was born in Kankakee, Illinois, on August 30, 1908. He began his career as a musician, playing saxophone in an orchestra. In 1930, he recorded a song as a vocalist for Gus Arnheim’s orchestra. MacMurray transitioned into acting, starting with romantic comedies. In 1934, after several appearances on Broadway, he signed a contract with Paramount Pictures.
At the height of his career, MacMurray worked with renowned directors like Billy Wilder and Preston Sturges, and starred alongside legendary actors such as Barbara Stanwyck, Humphrey Bogart, and Marlene Dietrich. He appeared with Claudette Colbert in seven films. One of his most notable dramatic roles was in Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity (1944).
In the 1960s, MacMurray gained popularity with the TV series My Three Sons, which ran for 12 years. One of his most famous films from this period is The Apartment (1960), where he starred alongside Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.
Fred MacMurray was married to actress June Haver, with whom he adopted a daughter. He passed away from leukemia in 1991 at the age of 83.
