Eleanor Jean Parker was born on June 26, 1922. The American actress began her career working in a theater. At the age of 19, she got a contract with Warner Bros., after doing countless auditions. She even made a few appearances, including in The Intrepid General Custer (1941), but her part ended up being cut.
After working in so many films, she finally got a prominent role in Of Human Bondage (1946). Unfortunately, she was once again unlucky and had to wait a little longer. She finally gained recognition after playing a prisoner in Caged (1950). Her role earned her an Oscar nomination for best actress. Satisfied with her efforts, the studio began to believe in her more and cast her in other films: She shone in The Fire (1951), a wonderful film in which she starred alongside Kirk Douglas, also earning an Oscar nomination.
In 1955, she was also nominated for A Melody That Wasn’t Right. And when it seemed like her career had finally taken off, she only got a few roles. Today, she is best known for her role in The Sound of Music, where she plays Baroness Elsa Schraeder.
The actress was married four times and had four children. She passed away on December 9, 2013, at the age of 91.
