Born in December 1906, Agnes Moorehead earned a PhD in Literature but was determined to pursue a career as an actress. She started her career performing in vaudeville and radio dramas. During one of her radio performances, she met Orson Welles and joined his company, The Mercury Theatre on the Air, in 1938. This opportunity led to her film debut, playing Welles’ mother in the acclaimed Citizen Kane (1941).

Although Agnes was married twice, sources indicate that she was bisexual and kept her private life very discreet.

Her biggest success came in 1964 with the hit TV series Bewitched, where she portrayed the majestic and flamboyant Endora, the mother of Samantha (played by Elizabeth Montgomery).

Agnes also taught dramatic arts at Universal Studios, mentoring actors such as Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, and Sandra Dee. Throughout her career, she was nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, though she never won.
