Julie Adams Dies at 92: Star of Creature from the Black Lagoon Remembered

Julie Adams, beloved star of Creature from the Black Lagoon, dies at 92. Her legacy lives on as a horror and classic Hollywood icon.

Julie Adams was born on October 17, 1926 in Iowa and started working as a secretary while trying to get a chance in the movies. At the age of 19, she entered the Miss Little Rock contest, won and decided to move permanently to Hollywood.

Already signed to Universal, she officially made her debut in The Dalton Gang (1949), still under her original name, Betty May Adams. But it took some time for her to gain any prominence. It was only when she participated in The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) that she became known. Below are some color photos of the film that was made in black and white:

The actress participated in several productions from then on, acting alongside great stars such as James Stewart, Tyrone Power, Glenn Ford, Elvis Presley, Charlton Heston and others. With the arrival of television, she also began to act in films and television series, among them appearing in episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Present.

In 2011, the retired actress released a book about her life: The Lucky Southern Star: Reflections From The Black Lagoon. She also gave several interviews and conventions, mainly those aimed at fans of the horror film that made her famous.

Julie was married twice. To screenwriter Leonard B. Stern (1950 – 1953) and director Ray Danton (1954 – 1981), with whom she had two children.

Actress Julie Adams, who became known for her work in the horror film Creature from the Black Lagoon, passed away on February 3, 2019 in Los Angeles. She was 92 years old. The news was confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by her son, Mitch Danton.
