Elsa Martinelli was born on January 30, 1935 in Tuscany. When she was still young, she moved to Rome, where she was discovered by Roberto Capucci. From there, she became a successful model.
Moving to the United States, she managed to pass some auditions and made her film debut. She appeared alongside Kirk Douglas in The Indian Fighter (1954), and two years later received the Silver Bear for best actress for Donatella (1956). Other important films included Hatari (1952), The Trial (1962) and Blood Roses (1960).
The actress was married twice, the first time to Franco Mancinelli (with whom she had her only daughter Cristina) and the second time to photographer Willy Rizzo. The actress died of cancer on July 8, 2017, at the age of 82.
