Richard Greene as Robin Hood: A Classic Hollywood Hero’s Legacy

Explore Richard Greene’s iconic portrayal of Robin Hood in “The Adventures of Robin Hood” TV series and the film “Sword of Sherwood Forest.”

Sword of Sherwood Forest

Robin Hood is the well-known hero who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Aided by his loyal friends and the residents of Sherwood Forest, he champions freedom and has been immortalized as the Prince of Thieves. To this day, we don’t know if he truly existed or if the legend was based on a real historical figure. Regardless, cinema has brought us numerous versions of his story, with famous actors embodying the role, including Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, and Richard Greene, to name just a few.

The English actor Richard Greene already had a significant film career in America and Europe when he took on the role of Robin Hood in a long-running television series: The Adventures of Robin Hood. The series aired for 143 episodes between 1955 and 1959, bringing him immense visibility. So popular was the show that various licensed products were mass-marketed to its dedicated audience.

Seeing the vast potential, producers decided to bring the story to the big screen in 1960 with the feature film Sword of Sherwood Forest. From the original series cast, only Richard Greene reprised his leading role in the movie, which also featured Peter Cushing and Sarah Branch.

The Hammer Films production was shot in County Wicklow, Ireland. While we can’t claim it’s a cinematic masterpiece, it effectively fulfills its purpose: to entertain a captive audience, devoted fans of the young hero who stole from the rich to give to the poor.
