The 2025 Venice Film Festival will pay a remarkable tribute to actress Kim Novak, awarding her the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. This recognition highlights her brilliant career, marked by iconic roles in productions such as Vertigo (1958) by Alfred Hitchcock, as well as classics like Kiss Me, Stupid, Picnic, and The Man with the Golden Arm. Now 92 and long retired from the screen, Novak leads a peaceful life in Oregon, devoted to painting and caring for her horses.

During the festival, which will take place from August 27 to September 6, 2025, the documentary Kim Novak’s Vertigo will be screened exclusively. Directed by Alexandre Philippe and created in close collaboration with the actress, the film celebrates both her contribution to cinema and her iconic performance in Vertigo, a role that remains relevant even six decades later.

The festival’s artistic director, Alberto Barbera, praised Novak for her independent and rebellious spirit, emphasizing how she challenged the norms of the Hollywood system of her time. According to Barbera, she “transformed her vulnerability into creative strength” and became a pioneer in defending female autonomy in an environment that pressured conformity. The Biennale committee’s decision reflects this perspective, acknowledging her unique and influential journey.

In her remarks upon receiving the award, Novak expressed how deeply moved she was by the tribute. “Being recognized for my work at this stage in my life is a dream come true,” she said, also sharing her excitement to enjoy every moment in Venice. The ceremony promises not only to honor her legacy but also to inspire future generations, showing that artistic independence and a lasting legacy are powerful achievements.
