Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff was born in Ohio on April 3, 1924. From a young age, she dedicated herself to ballet and even aspired to become a professional dancer. However, a serious accident that confined her to bed forced her to abandon her dream of a ballet career. It was during her recovery that she discovered and began to cultivate her singing talent, which would later blossom into a hugely successful career.

Her vocal prowess soon led to a contract with a radio station. In 1947, Doris made her cinematic debut in Michael Curtiz’s Romance on the High Seas (1948). In this film, she famously sang “It’s Magic,” earning her first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Following this, she starred in a series of “innocent” roles, often portraying wholesome girls and good wives, solidifying her public image as virginal and sweet. In 1959, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Pillow Talk, though she ultimately lost to Simone Signoret.

After the passing of her third husband, Marty Melcher, Doris retired from film and transitioned to hosting her own successful TV show. Doris was married to Al Jorden, George Weidler, Marty Melcher, and Barry Comden. She lived a private life in her later years, dedicating herself to animal rights advocacy. Her only son, Terry Melcher, tragically passed away from cancer in 2003 at the age of 62, leaving Doris with one grandson.
