Mickey Rooney, known for one of the longest careers in cinema history, began as a child actor and appeared in nearly 350 films to date. Although largely forgotten today, he was one of MGM’s biggest box office draws during the 1940s. Born Joe Yule Jr., Mickey Rooney was practically born into the theater. His parents were vaudeville performers, and at just 2 years old, he made his debut singing, dancing, and acting.
His first film role was in Not to Be Trusted (1926), where he played a dwarf. Throughout his career, he starred in over 130 films, including 10 shorts in the Mickey McGuire series (1920s) and 15 episodes of the Andy Hardy series, in which he was the lead actor. This series also helped launch the careers of actresses like Judy Garland, Lana Turner, and Ann Rutherford.
His first major role is considered to be in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935). In 1938, Mickey received a special Juvenile Academy Award, shared with Deanna Durbin. Even in his later years, Mickey remained active, attending the Oscars ceremony every year.
